Trekking Alaska

Member Spotlight: Trekking Alaska LLC

Trekking Alaska LLC is where the magic of short-term rentals meets the wild beauty of Alaska. With an impressive 8 years in the industry, Eric Hedstrand’s journey began by renting a room in his single-family home on Airbnb back in 2015. Fast forward, and he’s now crafting exceptional stays in the rugged Alaskan wilderness. From rural escapes to properties accessible only by boat, Eric’s portfolio reflects his commitment to offering unique and unforgettable experiences. Amid the incredible journey of hosting, Eric’s candid tale involves a logistical escapade that led to a box of trash instead of furniture. Yet, HostGPO’s unwavering support turned the situation around.

Eric’s journey is a treasure trove of insights. Join us in exploring the awe-inspiring world of Trekking Alaska LLC and the exceptional experiences Eric is creating.

How many years have you been in the short-term rental industry and how did you get started?

8 years, I started by renting a room on Airbnb in my single-family home back in 2015.

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

Giving guests a special place to complement their limited free time away from home and giving people local recommendations to enhance their trip!

What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it?

Of our three Trekking Alaska properties, it’s got to be Coho Cabana in Halibut Cove, Alaska. It’s an off-grid unique stay that is water access only. Guests come to appreciate that no roads lead to Coho Cabana!

What’s the craziest story you have from hosting?

I was getting an Alaska property up and running last year with HostGPO and ordered a bunch of furniture from West Elm. The journey to Alaska involved delivery by truck in Washington, barge over water to Anchorage, loaded on a moving truck to Homer, Alaska and delivered to our STR. Logistically challenging to say the least. During all the craziness of this we got shipped a box full of literally trash instead of the furniture we were expecting! HostGPO were rockstars helping us get squared away and express shipping what we needed to open up our rental last summer. Whenever I see Jen or Jeff they always remember me as the “box of trash” Alaska guy!

What’s one “pro-tip” you’d be willing to pass on to the community?

The biggest rookie mistake I made was not giving myself enough time to redesign, renovate and green light a new STR. Give yourself 1-2 weeks more time than even your most conservative estimate. You will always run into issues or that terrible situation hiding behind a wall or under a cabinet. You’ll be glad you have the extra time because you want to start strong!

What’s the most recent item that you can remember that you’ve ordered from HostGPO?

Couch from West Elm

What would you tell others about whether to join HostGPO?

HostGPO is legit. It’s reasonable, the staff are helpful and actually care, and the deals are great!
