How many years have you been in the short term rental industry and how did you get started?

0! I embarked on this journey with my boyfriend and this is our first time in this industry. We were crazy and decided to start with eight units at once – we didn’t just dip our feet in, we cannonballed! We love to travel and have stayed in so many vacation rentals and were in jobs we just weren’t loving. We were staying at a cute little tiny home in a small town for our past job and loved all the little things our host had done for the unit (our first time experiencing and loving Public Goods products!) and just started discussing what a cool opportunity having our own rental units would be. I love communicating with and tending to people, so hosting is like a dream job for me!

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

Like I said before, I love talking to people. Can I just say how cool of a job this is! You get to meet, even if just virtually, people from all over! We love Nashville and it’s so much fun getting to help other people fall in love with the city too! It’s been a joy getting to make people’s birthdays, anniversaries (we even had a first date!! – they were the cutest), and just times with their loved ones traveling special. Maybe that means putting a bottle of champagne in the room, or cupcakes, or even just adding something more personal to the thank you notes we leave. Knowing we can do small things like this to bring smiles to our guests faces brings me more joy than I even thought it would. Oh, also, my mom helps us clean our units and the guests LOVE her! We get reviews talking about my mom even. It has been so rewarding to get to share her and her heart with the people coming through our doors and just a joy in general to get to do this with the people we love most.

What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it?

Ooooh, you guys are making me pick! This is so tough! It is a running joke that our favorite switches the moment we walk into a different unit. BUT… if I had to give a favorite I would say the Jungle Room! I think our guests enjoy our Dolly Suite the most (I mean, of course they do! It’s pink, fun, and over the top cute), but the Jungle Room just has my heart. We have a bar in there that is big and fun. The green wall in the living room and tropical leaves wallpaper in the bedroom just scream a good time, not to mention a bathroom with cheetah print all over.

Any other details you want to share?

Nashville is such a fun and exciting city to get to do this in! We hope to help make this city an incredible experience for other people. If anyone reading this sees our properties and wants to come visit, reach out! We’d love to give anyone who mentions seeing this a discount to visit!

What’s the craziest story you have from hosting?

I would say all last weekend was a hoot for us to get to experience. We have been so hands on with these units, but we went on vacation and left them in our moms (plus my bonus mom: my stepmom) hands. Next thing I know I am getting messages from all of our guests saying how much they loved my mom. Apparently she became an Uber and delivery service for everyone. She was making runs to get things for different rooms, she ended up having a drink with the happy couple on their first date, and made sure everyone had her number in case they needed anything while they were there. I think every single one of our guests from that weekend will 100% come back to visit just to see my mom again.

What’s one “pro-tip” you’d be willing to pass on to the community?

Putting in the time and effort up front is so worth it. It may be hard spending the extra money or taking the extra few weeks to get your space done, but it pays off! It’s incredible the amount of times guests comment on how comfortable the bedding is or comment on our Pubic Goods products – just the other day we had a guest reach out after their stay because they just couldn’t stop thinking about how much they loved our shower products and the wall mount we used for them (all Public Goods)! Here are our top 3 tips:

  1. You can be as perfect as you possibly can be, but you will still have some sour patch guests. It doesn’t matter how great your unit is or how much you do to accommodate someone – there will be people that just want to complain and will choose your property to complain about. Just breathe and move on, don’t let it bring you down.
  2. Get to know your guests! Obviously, some guests want their space, but we have met so many of our guests personally while being in the building cleaning other units. You meet such wonderful, kind people! And it usually results in a fantastic review!
  3. Do it with the people you love! Having a support system is so important, especially one that you can trust with everything!

What’s the most recent item that you can remember that you’ve ordered from HostGPO?

Pretty much everything we could get our hands on! All of our linen is Brooklinen, our mattresses are Helix Hospitality, and we have the host boxes from Public Goods. We were able to provide high end products for our guests without breaking our bank! Without HostGPO, we would have had to compromise on things, but because of you guys, we got everything we wanted and more!

What would you tell others about whether to join HostGPO?

YES, DO IT, DON’T THINK TWICE ABOUT IT! I am not kidding when I say I have told anyone willing to listen about HostGPO! This company has helped us so much on this journey – even just with Callie talking about mattresses with us. We have been able to provide high-end, incredible products for our guests, without breaking our bank. Not only that, but they are products that will last us too. Run, don’t walk, to become a member of HostGPO.
