How many years have you been in the short-term rental industry and how did you get started?
Five years. I started in the industry because I was a digital nomad without a base for a couple of years and was noticing a desire to have a home base. I needed a place to kind of revolve around, and store my gear for playing outside. So, I decided to find a property that would STR well and I could stay in it between adventures.
What do you find most rewarding about your career?
It is so fun to meet travelers and hear what they are discovering and appreciating in my area.
What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it?
What's the craziest story you have from hosting?
I am always amazed at how small of a world it is, whether it is someone from my hometown or that we have traveled to the same far-off remote places.
What's one "pro-tip" you'd be willing to pass on to the community?
Be unique - go for something that has a niche subculture.
Automate - all you can: maintenance, email templates, ordering, checking supplies, etc.
Go to the property - regularly. Only you can know the quality you wish to present. When you keep going you catch the small things that someone else will miss and it will help you know what to replace or replenish.
What's the most recent item that you can remember that you've ordered from HostGPO?
A new round of patio furniture from Article. I love the bean bag chaise loungers!
What would you tell others about whether to join HostGPO?
It is so nice to have so many vendors who understand the scenario of STR. It is an emerging industry and it is nice to have them all together and recognize us hosts as business owners trying to make easy and strategic decisions.
