How many years have you been in the short term rental industry and how did you get started?
I’ve been in the long term rental business 20 years and the STR only 1 year.
What do you find most rewarding about your career?
Seeing the vision come alive. Developing a system using a combination of new and existing resources of technology and skilled people and then seeing it fully executed. Also getting to meet interesting people along the way that sometimes become lifelong friends.
What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it?
I have two. They are the best of both worlds. I have a house in Homer, Alaska that is strictly used for internal staff, friends and family. It has 360 degree views of 3 volcanoes and the Cook Inlet (ocean), nestled on a hilltop visited by resident cranes and moose year round. The other is The Luna House located in NE Scottsdale, AZ. Www.lunahouseAZ.org. This desert oasis has a 360 degree view of the desert and mountains of AZ- pool, hummingbirds, javelina, birds, and of course year round sunshine!
What’s the craziest story you have from hosting?
Fortunately I do not have any crazy stories YET from hosting STR in AZ, but I’ve had my fair share of long-term tenant stories. One of which led to me calling the police as I was verbally assaulted by a tenant’s adult daughter, who followed me to my car and proceeded to punch the window. STR stories are more like finding that the cleaning lady left all of the sheets in the washer and dryer and I found them 2 weeks later and had to purchase all new sets. Disclaimer- this was in Alaska at my Homer house NOT with my amazing cleaning crew in AZ.
What’s one “pro-tip” you’d be willing to pass on to the community?
Don’t get too emotionally attached, things happen, expect your stuff to get ruined, soiled, stained, or simply disappear. That happens daily in the house I live in with kids and dogs. That’s why I’m so happy to have found HostGPO to be able to purchase in bulk for a reasonable price.
