How many years have you been in the short-term rental industry and how did you get started?

We got started with our short-term rental three years ago as a way to afford getting into our dream neighborhood. The house is over 125 years old, and we couldn’t justify the ongoing renovations and upkeep unless the house generated some sort of income. We opted to utilize a management company when we started because, at the time, we wanted a buffer between us and the guests. (We live on the property) Since this was all new to us, we had no idea what to expect and all you ever hear are the horror stories! Recently, we did a light renovation and took over hosting ourselves. We created a community with other hosts in the area, and that support gave us the courage to take over our listing. This way we can create an elevated experience for guests. 

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

The ability to be an entrepreneur and small business owner! We love taking care of people as well as getting creative with renovating, designing interior spaces, marketing, and creating a memorable brand identity for Graymoor Estate. We’re drawn to cozy-chic aesthetics ourselves, and it’s rewarding to share that with other people. Guests often comment on it, and they definitely notice the little things.

What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it?

We currently have Graymoor Loft which is a chic boutique stay in Nashville’s most desirable neighborhood. While the space is cozy and sophisticated, the location is what makes it a winner. We’re one block from the city’s largest farmer’s market and many award-winning restaurants. The wide tree-lined streets are filled with historic homes which make for the perfect evening stroll.

What’s the craziest story you have from hosting?

We have more of a heartwarming story actually! An older couple came and we had a lovely time chatting with them throughout their stay. When they left, they gave us pear preserves that they canned from their fruit tree at home. We still talk about them 2 years later. 

What’s one “pro-tip” you’d be willing to pass on to the community?

Create an experience and provide amenities that you yourself would want. We’re here to take care of people and make sure they’re comfortable. Make sure that everything from the physical spaces to signage and instructions on the property are clear, friendly, helpful, and easy to use. Be proactive and solve issues before they arise. That means being a stickler about property maintenance!
