Paul Volk, co-founder of Rentalist, has immersed himself in the short-term rental scene for the past three years, seeking excitement and profitability. Transitioning from long-term to short-term rentals, he found inspiration from family members with a property near Disney. How many years have you been in the short-term rental industry and how did you get started?

I’ve been in short-term rentals for the last 3 years. I was bored of long-term rentals so we sold our local properties in Grand Rapids, MI, and decided to get into something we found a lot more exciting and a lot more profitable! We had family that had a short-term rental in Kissimmee near Disney so they showed us the ropes and we fell in love with hospitality from there!

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

When you talk to a guest you can tell genuinely had an amazing time at your property and made lifelong memories with their friends or family. It’s a fantastic feeling!

What is your favorite rental property you have and why do you love it? 

I love our newest property we just listed a couple of months ago. Everything is brand new and we love how the design turned out! 

What’s the craziest story you have from hosting?

We had a guest that booked over Christmas / New Year’s that was going to the ends of the earth to try to get $ from us for anything he could think of. Unfortunately, he was a massive buzzkill to me and a lot of our family as he was constantly messaging us over the holidays. Notably, he claimed that he used to work in mold remediation and he climbed around all throughout our attic looking for any sort of reason to get money out of us.

What’s one “pro-tip” you’d be willing to pass on to the community?

Treat your guests the way you want to be treated when you are on vacation! You will have happier guests and in the end you will have more satisfaction with providing your guests an exceptional stay!

What’s the most recent item that you can remember that you’ve ordered from HostGPO?

Just starting out with HostGPO but so far I’m highly impressed! I plan to furnish the majority of our new northern Michigan cottage with HostGPO!

What would you tell others about whether to join HostGPO?
